In love with a conditioner that leaves your hair silky smooth?  Can’t live without a lotion that keeps your skin as soft as a baby’s bottom?  Before you declare a beauty match made in heaven, take a look at the list of ingredients.  If you find propylene glycol on the list, you may have a case of irreconcilable differences.

Propylene glycol is an ingredient commonly used as a humectant in many beauty products.  It gives products the silky, moisturizing texture that we love.  The Medical Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) states that propylene glycol is toxic to humans and can cause irritation of skin and eyes.

Only small amounts are used in product formulations which leads people to feel more comfortable with it being in their products.  However, using these small amounts in your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, etc. can turn into a large amount on a daily basis.  It is important to do your research and be aware of what is going into your personal care products because it ultimately ends up going into your body.
