Great news for tea drinkers! Put a smile on your face and flash those pearly white teeth. A recent study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene found that adding milk to your tea can actually prevent your teeth from being stained.
You may not realize it, but, tea has significantly higher staining properties than coffee. This is due to the way tea is processed. Tea that is highly processed or oxidized contains a high amount of tannins. Tannins are the components that give tea its rich, dark color which can transfer onto tooth enamel as stains. Dr. Ava Chow and her team of scientists found that adding milk to tea reduces the teaβs ability to stain teeth.

The conduct the study, Chow placed extracted human teeth into a controlled solution of just tea and a solution of tea with milk. Color readings were recorded after leaving the teeth in the solutions for twenty-four hours. The results indicated that the milk protein, casein, is responsible for the reduction in staining.
Chow went on to state, “the magnitude of the color change observed in our experiments is comparable to the color change seen by vital bleaching products and more effective than whitening toothpastes.β The verdict is still out on whether this works the same for coffee since this study was done only with tea. However, coffee does contain some amount of tannins, so adding milk may have the same results on a smaller scale.
