The rule of thumb when trying out a new beauty product is to always start with a patch test. Swatching a product on a small area of skin can make all the difference in having an allergic reaction that could have you sidelined for a period of time. This is especially true when trying natural beauty products that you make yourself.
It is a common misnomer that using natural ingredients eliminates the possibility of any adverse side effects. Natural items are very unstable and can cause just as severe of an allergic reaction as synthetic items. For the very reason that you use beauty products, be sure to always do a patch test; to maintain your health and beauty.
HOW TO PATCH TEST
1. Apply a small amount of product on your wrist or inside of your elbow.
2. Leave the product unwashed for 24- 48 hours.
3. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction. Signs of a reaction will include redness, a rash, any form of breakouts on the skin, itchiness, pain, and/or flaking. Some people may also experience nausea or respiratory reactions. If any of these signs arise, wash product off immediately. Consult your doctor immediately.
4. If you do not have any allergic reaction symptoms, it is likely that the product is all right for your skin type.
Confession: I never do patch tests. Oops!
It’s easy to forget to do it every time you try something new…but definitely worth the extra effort just to be on the safe side. Thanks for checking out my blog post 🙂
