It’s time to indulge in some sweet treats for Halloween! But be careful that your sweet indulgence doesn’t become a habit. A sugar overload can make want to wear a Halloween mask all year round. Why? Some experts have linked the intake of too much sugar to premature wrinkles and skin aging.
How Sugar Causes Wrinkles
When sugar enters the bloodstream it attaches to proteins forming a harmful molecule, ironically, known as AGEs (advanced glycation end products). “As AGEs accumulate, they damage collagen and elastin”, explains renowned dermatologist, Fredric Brandt, MD.
Collagen and elastin are responsible for firm and elastic skin and once the damage is done, they become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkles and sagging. In addition, AGEs deactivate your body’s natural antioxidant enzymes, leaving you more vulnerable to sun damage which is still the main cause of skin aging.
3 Tips to Protect Your Skin From The Effects of Sugar
- Avoid high fructose corn syrup
This type of sweetener is believed to produce more AGEs than other types. It is a common ingredient in sodas, fruit drinks, and packaged foods. Read ingredient lists to be sure you’re avoiding it.
- Eat antioxidants daily
Antioxidants help keep sugar from attaching to proteins and forming AGEs. Eat more antioxidant-rich fruits, nuts, and vegetables on a daily basis. This includes berries, walnuts, and red bell peppers.
- Use skincare products that contain vitamins C and E
Applying these antioxidant-rich vitamins directly onto the skin is a sure way to protect the dermal layer of skin which is where collagen and elastin are located.
