Hand sanitizers have become the modern-day supplement to old-fashioned soap and water. They provide on-the-spot protection against germs and bacteria because of their high content of alcohol, which is the main active ingredient. But if you take a closer look at the other ingredients in your hand sanitizer, you might be suprised at what you find.
Many hand sanitizers contain propylene glycol, phenols, fragrance, and other chemicals. These ingredients are highly toxic and can be just as hazardous as the germs you’re trying to eliminate. For stain and odor removal products you should try odor eliminator for homes to make your home and pets germ-free.
Learn how to make your own hand sanitizer using safe, natural, non-toxic ingredients. This easy recipe will leave your hands soft, moisturized, and germ-free.
Ingredients (yields approximately 8 fl oz):
*Do not alter ingredient measurements because solution must be at least 65% alcohol to effectively eliminate germs and bacteria.
2/3 cup isopropyl alcohol
1/6 cup aloe vera gel
1/6 cup glycerin
10 drops tea tree oil
10 drops orange or lavender essential oil
Directions:
Use a clean empty glass bottle or container with a lid to mix ingredients. First, mix aloe vera gel and glycerin together and place into container. Next, add alcohol and essential oils into container. Place lid securely onto container and shake until all ingredients are completely blended. Use a funnel to pour solution into a small spray bottle for easy, portable use.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I got to looking at my hand sanitizer and yes it did have that ingredient. It seems like everything you get now has some sort of toxin in it. Thanks for sharing the recipe, I’m sure I will be making it soon.
You’re welcome for the recipe. It’s frustrating when every product contains toxic ingredients. The FDA doesn’t regulate what cosmetic companies use in their products. So, they use the cheapest ingredients they can, without any regard to the possible health hazards. Hope you enjoy the recipe : )
Thank you for taking the time to educate us about hand sanitizers. They are just awful for you and for the environment. Many anti-bacterial soaps also contain triclosan which should be banned but hasn’t been yet. We tend to forget that when we are washing our hands we are also washing those chemicals down the drain and into our waterways.
I agree. Thanks for your feedback, Anne.
