The next time you’re feeling stressed, nauseous, or even pain, you may need to put some pressure on yourself with reflexology. Reflexology (also known as zone therapy) is an alternative medicine in which pressure is applied to specific points on the ears, hands, or feet.
These specific pressure points correspond to various parts of the body and bodily functions. Stimulating these points can relieve pain, increase circulation, reduce anxiety, and have overall positive health effects. Studies from The American Cancer Society have shown that reflexology helps promote relaxation and pain reduction.
Feeling lethargic? Boost energy levels.
Run ice-cold water on the inside of your wrist for thirty seconds. Cold water on the wrist is felt throughout the body within seconds resulting in an overall energization. The cold water also triggers the release of the hormone, noradrenaline which sharpens the brain’s ability to focus.
Feeling stressed? Reduce anxiety.
With your palm facing you, trace an imaginary line from the outside edge of your pinky finger down to your wrist. Apply moderate pressure for about twenty seconds. This point on the wrist is associated with the heart meridian. Applying pressure on this point slows pulse rate and calms the nervous system.
Upset stomach? Relieve nausea.
With your palm facing you, place thumb three fingers length down from the top crease in your wrist. Apply moderate pressure until you nausea decreases. Stimulating this point signals the brain to release neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins which block the chemical reactions that cause nausea and vomiting.
